McCarthy Care Center reopens for hospice care

McCarthy Care Center

The McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich has once again opened its doors to those in hospice who may need more acute management of their symptoms.

The long-awaited reopening happened last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility on Service Road. The center, which was included in the transfer of ownership from HopeHealth to Cape Cod Healthcare in 2019, is under the auspices of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Cape Cod Hospice.

“The reopening of McCarthy Care Center allows us to provide hospice patients and their families with the option of inpatient hospice care in a unique and peaceful setting,” said Michael K. Lauf, president and CEO, Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent company of the VNA.

The center has been a valued, interwoven thread of the community since its inception more than 30 years ago, when the first hospice organization on Cape Cod was founded by Mary E. McCarthy.

“It’s such a well-loved part of this community and I am so glad to be a part of the team to bring it back to life,” said Sharon Molinaro, RN, Director of Hospice Operations and the McCarthy Care Center.

True to the original hospice house in Barnstable, the building is a welcoming, quiet, and tranquil place where patients and families are cared for by the hospice team that can support them through a difficult time in their lives.

The hospice team is comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, certified nurse’s aides, social workers, chaplains, music therapists, bereavement counselors, volunteers and house assistants (for food services and housekeeping).

“The center is a GIP center (general inpatient) for symptom management and is not for respite or long-term care,” said Molinaro. “The goal is to transition patients back to wherever they call home.” If the patient needs other placement after their stay, the social workers can help facilitate that with the patient and their family.

Patients can be admitted to the facility as a direct hospice admission from Cape Cod or Falmouth Hospitals and partnering Boston hospitals. There are hospice liaisons at both Cape hospitals that can also facilitate the admission. Patients can also be transferred from their VNA Hospice care at home to the center for symptom management.

Welcome Updates

Cape Cod Healthcare has been updating and refurbishing the center over the past year. This included work on the inside of the building and some outside landscaping. Some of the changes include:

  • New floors, bathrooms, updated equipment, heating and air conditioning units and freshly painted walls in each of the 10 rooms.
  • New glass doors opening to the private decks, which allow for wonderful views of the gardens, red brick walking paths and a gazebo surrounded by shrubs and flowers.
  • Reconstructed thresholds for better access to the decks, which are wide enough for bedridden patients to be moved outside for a view of the yards and surrounding woods.
  • Updates to the common area, complete with a baby grand piano, which provides a place for families to meet in the comfort of a living room-style setting.
  • New counters, storage areas and some new appliances in the kitchen area.

Families play an integral role in the lives of their loved ones, and can visit at any time, but there are some limitations due to COVID-19.

Visitors will be limited to two visitors per patient. “They will have to be pre-screened,” said Molinaro. “There is a temperature scanner in the front entrance, and we will be doing survey questions, which are the same questions they ask when you go to your doctor’s office.” For the safety of our patients, visitors and staff, use of indoor common areas is limited to the chapel due to COVID-19.

Although physical visitation is limited, due to the ongoing pandemic, the staff can provide virtual visits with family and friends using modern technology with mobile computers and on their work phones.

With the reopening of McCarthy Care House, the everyday calls Molinaro received over the past year inquiring when the center would re-open will now subside.

“It is a very calm, unique environment and a very special place,” she said. “It’s an honor to be able to help empower families to take care of their loved ones.”
