Gynecological Cancer

If you have been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer (cancer of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vulva or vagina), our dedicated experts will work with you to make sure you receive the most advanced care available.

An experienced gynecological oncologist from Brigham and Women’s Hospital is available to perform specific surgeries at our hospitals alongside your local gynecologic surgeon, making it possible for you to recover close to home.

How Gynecological Cancer is Diagnosed

A physical exam is the first step in checking for gynecological cancers. Some kinds of cancer, such as cervical cancer, can be detected through cancer screening methods like Pap tests and HPV tests.

To confirm the presence of cancer, a tissue sample will be taken and the cells will be examined in the laboratory. Other tests, such as ultrasound imaging, may also be conducted.

How Gynecological Cancer is Treated

Your medical team, consisting of specialists and healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines, will collaborate on the best treatment for your type and stage of cancer. Your treatment may involve one or a combination of these options:

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Some gynecological cancer surgeries can be done with a less invasive approach than traditional surgery and result in smaller incisions and a quicker return to regular activities. This includes both laparoscopic and robotic surgery. All of Cape Cod Healthcare's gynecologic surgeons are skilled in minimally invasive techniques.
