Farm and Local Health Alliance for Vegetables and Fruit in Outcome-based Rx program

Final FLAVORx Report

The results of the study will be available in a final report in February 2017. To learn more about the program or receive a copy of the report, please email Casey Bent.

FLAVORx - Farm and Local Health Alliance for Vegetables and Fruit in Outcome-based Rx program – was a 12-week study conducted right here on Cape Cod by Emerald Physicians medical director Kumara Sidhartha, MD. The study followed 18 people to see whether by changing to a whole food, plant-based diet could measurably improve their health. The pilot also investigated how nutritional education and better access to fresh fruits and vegetables can improve the health of individuals and families.

The challenge of eating healthier is particularly acute on Cape Cod. It may surprise many that access to fresh fruits and vegetables among lower-income residents is the lowest of any county in Massachusetts.

Dr. Sidhartha's program has already shown promising results. One patient's blood sugar level recently dropped from a dangerous 417 to a normal 100. Another patient went from experiencing heart pain after five steps to walking miles without discomfort.

In both cases, Dr. Sidhartha attributes such improvement to eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Cape Cod Healthcare is a major sponsor of the FLAVORx program.
