Thankful for great care after hip replacement

Jon Shuman of Mashpee is very grateful for the care he received when he had hip replacement surgery in October 2025 done by Paul Dimond, MD, a Falmouth Hospital orthopedic surgeon.

He says he is thankful for Dr. Dimond’s expertise as well as the care he received from the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod and the Falmouth Hospital Rehabilitation department following his surgery.

“I did really well,” said Shuman. “The day of surgery, I was walking around afterwards and even walked up some stairs. I did so well that when I was told to use a walker for two weeks, I found I didn’t need it after one week. They told me to carry it with me the second week just in case I needed it. I only took my pain medication for three days and then I stopped taking it.”

Having suffered from several years of back pain, Shuman assumed the pain he was feeling was from his back. But soon he learned it was from an arthritic hip that needed to be replaced. Shuman had heard many good things about Dr. Dimond and decided he would meet with him. “He looked at the X-rays and the MRI and told me it was clearly my hip, which was bone on bone,” he said.

Shuman also commends the two physician assistants (PA) he saw at Dr. Dimond’s office for follow-up after his surgery, Lara Baldasaro, PA-C and Justin Cobis, MPAS.

His surgery went well and he then learned that the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod and the Islands would provide for services in his home after the surgery.

VNA and Physical Therapy

After his discharge home, the VNA nurse checked in on him, and he had physical therapy as well. They came every day for the first week and then three times a week for a couple of weeks.

“They were great!” said Shuman. “Their care was consistent, well-trained, treated me with dignity and they were always on time. They were personable, and they cared.”

Shuman moved on to outpatient physical therapy at Falmouth Hospital after a couple of weeks of home physical therapy.

“The physical therapists at Falmouth Hospital were top notch,” Shuman said. “Brett was my physical therapist and Sherry covered for him when he was away. The schedulers were fabulous, they scheduled all of my appointments, and I didn’t have to do any of that.”

“I have a great deal of experience with Cape Cod Healthcare because they took care of my wife when she was very sick,” said Shuman. “They always treated us with dignity and respect.”
