10 Questions with Michael Julian

If you accept a new job at Cape Cod Hospital or the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, chances are one of the first people you will meet is Recruitment Specialist Michael Julian at 60 Park Street in Hyannis.

He oversees new hire onboarding appointments, which involve paperwork and compliance (required licenses and certifications). He also manages the occupational health process. “Overall, I make sure employees are all cleared and good to go to start with us,” says Mike, 25. In addition to his onboarding role, Mike also handles social media for HR, assists with recruiting events at local schools and posts jobs for Cape Cod Hospital and the VNA.

Mike is currently working on filling the summer student helper positions at Cape Cod Hospital, Falmouth Hospital, MACC and the VNA. “Our goal is to fill all 30 positions by June, and we are well on our way to meeting this goal,” says Mike. “These are paid positions, so it’s a great opportunity for a high school student to dip their toe in the water.”

The Assumption College graduate, who majored in marketing, admits he didn’t set out to work in healthcare but decided to explore this field after his mom encouraged him to apply. “After I met everyone on the recruitment team and I was offered the job, I didn’t hesitate,” says Mike. “I felt right at home.”

The Dennis native says he loves meeting new hires during the onboarding appointments. “It’s interesting to see everyone’s personality and to see how excited they are to start a new chapter.” He especially finds it rewarding when he’s able to transfer someone into a new position after earning the right qualifications. “It’s so gratifying,” he says. “I’ve done this a few times now and people are so appreciative and happy they are able to move into a role they’ve dreamed about.”

We recently stopped by Mike’s office to learn about what he’s most excited about this year, what he enjoys doing in his free time and the one superpower he would want the most.

1. Do you have a mantra or phrase you live by?

The Golden Rule—treat others how you would like to be treated. That is very important in life. People may stray from it, but I try to stick with it the best I can.

2. The best advice you have received from a friend, family or coworker?

Really just taking everything one step at a time. When I worked in kitchens at local restaurants, a coworker shared this advice when dealing with the dinner rush. It helped me with time management and customer service. This advice really resonates with not just work, but everything in life..

3. Anything surprising people might not know about you?

I am a big sports person. I’m enjoying March Madness. I do a bracket with my family every year. I also love basketball and golf, both of which I played in high school (at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School). I love watching football—really any sport.

4. Describe your perfect day off.

Sleeping in. I am a big fan of sleep. If it’s nice out, I would play a round of golf and have a relaxing day. I’m not the type of person who goes on vacation and needs an itinerary. I just kind of relax and take everything as it comes.

5. What on the horizon are you most excited about?

Moving into my own apartment with my girlfriend in April. We are saving up to buy a house, hopefully in the near future.

6. Favorite movie:

I’m split between “Inception” and “The Departed,” both with Leonardo DiCaprio.

7. Where do you enjoy going on the Cape?

Mayflower Beach and Cold Storage Beach. My best friend lives at the top of Cold Storage Road, so we go over there and walk down, which is nice. I also enjoy going to either Dennis Highlands or Dennis Pines Golf Course. In the summer, I love going to the Sand Bar at West Dennis beach for lunch. It’s nice to sit out on back patio.

8. Favorite TV show?

Definitely “The Office.” My favorite characters are either Dwight or Kevin. Michael is great, too.

9. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Teleportation. I love traveling, but I hate the time it takes to get there. I would love to be able to have lunch in Italy and dinner in Hawaii. I could travel the world at the snap of my fingers.

10. Iced or hot coffee?

Iced year-round. It could be 30 below, and I’ll still get iced. At Dunkin’, I’ll normally get a medium iced caramel swirl with milk. That’s my go-to, but I’ll switch it up every once in a while because I’ll get bored.
