Substance Use Disorders Initiative at Cape Cod Healthcare

The crisis of substance use disorder is not unique to Cape Cod, but its impact is profound.

Cape Cod Healthcare is positioned to make an impact in key areas of addiction, from diagnosing and treating the underlying mental health issues that can contribute to substance use disorder, to educating our prescribers in the proper use of opioids. As a community safety net provider, we are able to partner with other organizations across Cape Cod to offer our expertise, leadership and financial support for initiatives in our schools, community centers and in treatment programs – reaching our neighbors outside of Cape Cod Healthcare.

Our commitment to addressing this issue:

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Barnstable County had a 340% increase in the annual rate of opioid overdose deaths from 2000-2015. Alcohol addiction impacts 8% of Cape Codders, as reported in a 2017-2019 Community Health Needs Assessment [pdf]. When compared to the state, Barnstable County had significantly higher rates in the following categories:

Through initiatives in Behavioral Health, community partnerships and support of efforts across Cape Cod, Cape Cod Healthcare is committed to addressing this significant health priority.
