Delivering excellence and innovation.
The OB/GYN providers on Cape Cod offer the highest quality surgical care for both obstetrics (childbirth) and gynecology (diseases of the female reproductive organs). With long-established teams of surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists, women are assured of multi-disciplinary, continuous care.
The maternity units at both Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital have a family-centered philosophy, which means labor, delivery and recovery occur in the same room. Consistent with the latest research, each woman in labor has a dedicated nurse for encouragement as well as continuity in infant care education. The goal is to facilitate more successful deliveries and to enable babies and moms to stay together, rather than having the baby go to a nursery down the hall.
“We take care of all surgical (C-Section) deliveries, as well as high risk deliveries and ectopic pregnancies,” says Richard Angelo, M.D., board-certified OB/GYN surgeon at Cape Cod Hospital.
Childbirth is but one aspect of the OB/GYN field. “We perform the whole range of gynecological surgical procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic,” says Paul DeMeo, M.D., board-certified OB/GYN surgeon at Falmouth Hospital. “Our most common surgical procedure is the hysterectomy, both abdominal and vaginal.”
The Cape’s OB/GYN and GYN surgeons are well-versed in both traditional (open abdominal) as well as minimally invasive techniques, performing advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries. Endometriosis can now be treated with a one-day procedure using lasers, whereas previously those patients might have needed a hysterectomy. Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) can reduce lost time, and fibroids can be removed using the hysteroscope instead of open surgery with a large abdominal scar.
For cancer care, Cape Cod Healthcare’s unique partnership with gynecologic oncologists from Women and Infants Hospital in Providence brings a high level of specialization for gynecological cancers without the patient needing to travel. These physicians participate in Cape Cod Healthcare’s multi-disciplinary tumor boards and assist in some surgeries.
Another exciting development in the field with a greater than 90% success rate is the minimally invasive Tension Free Vaginal Tape (TVT) performed at both hospitals to treat stress urinary incontinence. "TVT offers the advantage of just two smaller incisions, faster recovery, and it can be done under local anesthesia in less than 30 minutes. In addition, four out of five patients don’t need any catheterization,” said Dr. Angelo.
On the Cape, you’ll find many of the same treatments and procedures you’d see in larger hospitals, but with the community hospital’s individualized care and attention, which means you stay close to home and family support.
