Cape Cod Healthcare patients receive an outstanding level of state-of-the-art anesthesiology care. All Cape Cod Healthcare anesthesiologists are physicians, all are board-certified, and all are highly dedicated to keeping abreast of new drugs and techniques.
Cape anesthesiologists oversee the systems and medications for both general and regional anesthesia, and are actively involved in patient care from pre-to-post op.
"Before an operation, we’ll meet to explain technique and determine the medication best suited to the patient, considering possible interactions. This is very effective in alleviating pre-operative fear,” said Kenneth Scalera, M.D., anesthesiologist at Cape Cod Hospital. “We do everything possible to make patients feel comfortable, such as using headphones and music to calm them if we’re using a regional anesthetic.”
Anesthesiologists prepare the patient for surgery, monitor and administer the anesthesia peri-operatively, and use the latest in nerve monitoring technologies to monitor status and reduce complications.
“Through the judicious choice of anesthesia techniques, we can minimize or limit post-operative nausea and pain,” said Dr. Scalera. They also manage post-operative pain with nerve block and epidural catheters.
Even with minimally invasive procedures using regional anesthesia with no breathing tube, the anesthesiologist is still central to the procedure.
“Our medication decisions impact the surgery, keep the patient pain-free, and help ensure a shorter stay in the recovery room,” Dr. Scalera explained.
