Emily Tierney, MD
Originally from California, Dr. Tierney came east for her residency in Dermatology at Tufts University School of Medicine and New England Medical Center in Boston. She did her fellowship training in Dermatology at American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and ACGME Procedural Dermatology in Carmel, Indiana. While there, she trained with renowned Dermatologic Surgeon C. William Hanke, MD.
With Mohs micrographic surgery, the Dermatologic Surgeon acts as both surgeon and pathologist. “It’s very challenging from the diagnosis component,” Dr. Tierney said. She is able to take pathology samples from patients in her office, get a diagnosis and inform them immediately whether the sample is cancerous. She is often able to remove the tumor during the same visit.
Dr. Tierney is particularly skilled at preserving as much of the patient’s original skin alignment as possible. “We do a lot of similar techniques as plastic surgeons. You need to have an artistic eye to see how skin is going to close best,” she said.
Since arriving on Cape Cod in 2011, Dr. Tierney has successfully treated scores of skin cancer cases using Mohs micrographic surgery. “This is the happier part of oncology; to be able to excise a tumor and tell folks it’s not going to come back,” she said.
