Vascular Surgery
A multidisciplinary approach.
The Cape Cod Healthcare Vascular Surgery team of board-certified Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Nurses and Technologists is using the latest technologies to treat varicose veins and blood clots. Vascular Surgeons work closely with Interventional Radiologists and Cardiologists for a multidisciplinary approach to care and treatment. Vascular Surgeons, who perform surgeries on the body’s major arteries and veins, with the exception of the heart, have been trained in and are experienced in all aspects of Vascular Surgery.
This includes the traditional and highly successful carotid endarterectomy to clear blockages in the carotid artery leading to the brain. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with a one-night hospital stay. A less-invasive technique, stent-assisted carotid angioplasty, has been developed with the same goal in mind. In this procedure, the narrowed artery is dilated with a balloon and a metal stent is implanted to hold the artery open.
Aortic aneurysm (weakening of the blood vessel wall) is another common problem. Traditional treatment calls for open surgery to replace the weakened artery with a new graft. Using a less-invasive, procedure called endovascular aneurysm repair, our surgeons can repair abdominal aortic aneurysms with a stent-like device inserted through a catheter to reinforce the aorta walls.
