New Dermatology Practice Open in Hyannis

(Hyannis, Nov. 15, 2011)Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce the opening of Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center of Cape Cod at the new Wilkens Outpatient Medical Complex on Attucks Lane in Hyannis. Emily Tierney, MD, a board-certified Dermatologist and Fellowship trained Mohs Micrographic Surgeon, is now seeing patients at the Center. Call 1-508-957-1650 to make an appointment.

Dr. Tierney did her fellowship training in Mohs Surgery at the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery at St Vincent Hospital, Carmel, Indiana. While there, she trained with renowned Dermatologic Surgeon C. William Hanke, MD.

Originally from California, Dr. Tierney is a graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine where she received her Doctorate of Medicine with Honors in Research. Dr. Tierney came east for her residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, New England Medical Center. She then completed residency training in Dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital, MI and her fellowship training in Indiana. After completing her training, she decided to return to New England and was in practice in Boston and Plymouth prior to her arrival on Cape Cod. She is also on the faculty at Tufts University Department of Dermatologic Surgery, where she teaches Dermatologic surgery.

Dr. Tierney has a strong record of academic investigation and publications. She is the author of over 60 scientific publications in peer reviewed literature, focusing on skin cancer, reconstruction and laser surgery. She has received research grants from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgeons, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and Stanford University School of Medicine. She has lectured extensively at national and international scientific conferences.

Mohs surgery is precise micrographic surgery performed in the office to completely remove tumors while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Microscopic margins of the tumor are removed until it is entirely gone. The Dermatologic Surgeon acts as both pathologist and surgeon. The technique has the advantage of having a 95-99% cure rate for skin cancer as well as cosmetic and functional preservation.

Dr. Tierney is particularly skilled at preserving as much of the patient’s original skin alignment and cosmesis as possible. “The reconstructive component of skin cancer surgery is the most challenging and rewarding.  After surgical excision of the skin cancer, we carefully evaluate the best reconstructive modality to ensure optimal cosmetic and functional preservation. I love the artistic aspect of Mohs surgery and the uniqueness of each patient’s anatomy is where my work becomes a form of aristry,” she said.

Dr. Tierney said her Cape Cod patients convinced her to bring her practice and her skills to Cape Cod.  “I am very grateful to my patients who have been my supporter and my advocate and have stimulated my interest in practicing in Cape Cod. Skin cancer is on an exponential rise across the country, with over 2.5 million skin cancers diagnosed annually in the US. If we are able to detect and treat cancers in their earliest stage, the vast majority of tumors are cured with excisional surgery alone,” she said. “I enjoy the tremendous rewards from treating skin cancers with surgical removal, this is a part of oncology where we are truly able to cure patients of cancer.”
