Innovative End-of-Life Discussion Set for July 19 in Falmouth
(Falmouth, June 24, 2011) The Falmouth Hospital Cancer Committee, in collaboration with the Falmouth Public Library, invites the public to a unique reading of scenes from Sophocles’ “Philoctetes” and “The Women of Trachis,” at 7 p.m. on July 19 on the lawn of the Falmouth Public Library at 300 Main Street in the village of Falmouth.
The readings, performed by actors from the New York City-based “Theatre of War,” explore the issues that are often addressed toward the end of life. This provocative, dramatic reading is an innovative presentation based on timeless Greek tragedy. It is designed to foster compassion, cooperation and understanding.
The performance serves as a catalyst for dynamic discussion afterwards among the audience and the actors about the challenges faced by medical professionals and caregivers today.
“2,500 years ago, the ancient Greeks struggled with the same end of life issues we face today,” said FH Cancer Committee Co-Chair Peter Hopewood, MD. “The actors will recreate how Sophocles verbalized these difficult themes.”
The event is free and open to the public. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket. In the event of rain, the presentation will be held inside the library. The program is made possible in part by a generous donation from Pat Thatcher. For more information, please call Deb Crockett-Rice at 508-862-5456.
