Falmouth Hospital Honored Again for Stroke Care
(Falmouth, April 13, 2011) Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that Falmouth Hospital has again been recognized for its outstanding stroke care. The hospital received the ‘Defect-free Care” Award by the Stroke Collaborative Reaching for Excellence (SCORE). SCORE is a stroke registry and quality improvement initiative implemented as a partnership among the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry and the American Heart/Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines® program.
Falmouth Hospital was recognized for “defect-free care provided to a minimum of 70% of patients” during the time period between Oct. 1, 2009, and Sept. 30, 2010. In Falmouth Hospital’s case, 84% of stroke patients at the hospital during that time period received all of the interventions for which they were eligible. The interventions considered in the award are the appropriate use of medications like the clot-busting drug, t-PA, antithrombotics and anticoagulation therapy, as well as cholesterol-reducing drugs, dysphagia screening, smoking cessation counseling and rehabilitation assessment.
“What really gets us excited is seeing the lives we’re impacting,” said Jean Estes, RN, Stroke Nurse Coordinator at Falmouth Hospital. “Our greatest reward is serving our patients.”
The SCORE award is the latest in a series of stroke awards Falmouth Hospital has received in the last two years. In July 2009, the hospital received the Get With the Guidelines® Gold Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart/Stroke Association for its strict adherence to practices that best treat and prevent strokes. Later that year, the hospital received the Get With the Guidelines® Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. To receive the award, the hospital achieved 85% or higher adherence to all stroke intervention measures for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals.
