Cape Hospitals Prepared for Hurricane
(Aug. 26, 2011) Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital are well-prepared to ride out Hurricane Irene, should it arrive as a significant weather event this weekend. Both hospitals have emergency preparedness plans that are ready to be activated at a moment’s notice. The plans are reviewed and updated throughout the year, and disaster drills are performed twice a year.
Both hospitals’ preparedness plans have in place an incident command structure and a standard response protocol for hurricanes and other emergencies. Emergency Preparedness Committees at both facilities work closely with local Emergency Preparedness Committees in Falmouth and Barnstable, as well as the county. The combined committees meet and conduct drills throughout the year.
The hospitals maintain a minimum of three days’ supply of food and water, as well as fuel to power the facilities’ generators for up to seven days. In addition, CCHC has a supply of sandbags to bolster any low-lying areas of the Cape Cod Hospital campus, if necessary.
Our Preparedness Plan includes staffing procedures in the event of a hurricane, which includes deployment of clinical and non-clinical staff. The plan ensures that there is an adequate number of staff throughout the storm.
Both hospitals were designed and structured to withstand all New England weather conditions, and we wish to assure the public that Cape Cod Healthcare is well-prepared to meet the storm.
