Cape Cod’s Hospitals Earn More Quality and Patient Safety Accolades
(Hyannis, February 10, 2011) Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that its two hospitals have earned a combined 104 Quality and Patient Safety Awards, according to the latest data from The Delta Group, a leading health care information services company.
Among the awards, Cape Cod Hospital ranks first in Massachusetts in Overall Hospital Care, Overall Surgical Care, General Surgery, Interventional Coronary Care, Hip Fracture Repair and Gastrointestinal Care. Falmouth Hospital ranks first in the state in Overall Medical Care and Neurological Care. The distinctions place the hospitals in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation in their respective categories.
“Our two hospitals have achieved and maintained superior performance in many medical and patient safety categories,” said Michael Lauf, President and CEO of CCHC. “The Delta Group’s rating system is more comprehensive and multi-dimensional than other rating systems, so to have Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital grade so highly is a true testament to the talent and dedication of our physicians, nurses and other medical professionals.”
In July, The Delta Group reported the 2010 results, which showed the two hospitals had earned 62 Quality and Patient Safety Awards. The 2011 awards were released late last year and reflect an expanded list which acknowledges excellence in more areas of care.
The Delta Group uses the CareChex® Medical Quality Rating system to collect and conduct a comprehensive multi-dimensional analysis of medical data from hospitals. It uses both public and proprietary information. By factoring in a variety of process, outcome, safety and patient satisfaction measures, CareChex® is able to accurately compare a hospital’s performance against national, state and local standards of care.
To arrive at the awards, CareChex® looks at a long list of outcomes in each clinical category. For instance, the Overall Medical Care category consists of outcomes in all inpatient medical conditions treated by full-service hospitals. The Overall Hospital Care category consists of all inpatient medical conditions and surgical procedures that are treated or performed by full-service hospital, with the exception of pancreas transplants and heart transplants.
The General Surgery category includes outcomes in nearly 100 surgical procedures, and Major Orthopedic Care looks at outcomes in about 25 major surgical areas, such as spinal fusions, joint replacements and major shoulder or elbow joint procedures.
In addition to the top rankings in Massachusetts, the two Cape Cod Healthcare hospitals were acknowledged for other areas of care in the Medical Excellence category. Cape Cod Hospital ranks among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the country in Overall Medical Care, Cancer Care, Orthopedic Care, Major Orthopedic Surgery and Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage. Falmouth Hospital is among the top 10 percent in the nation in Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage, Hip Fracture Repair, Neurological Care, Pneumonia Care, Pulmonary Care and Stroke Care.
In the Patient Safety category, CCH produces outcomes that rank among the top 10 percent in the nation in Overall Hospital Care, Overall Surgical Care, Cancer Care, Gastrointestinal Care, General Surgery, Hip Fracture Repair, Major Bowel Procedures, Major Orthopedic Surgery, Stroke Care, Vascular Surgery and Women’s Health. In this category, FH is among the top 10 percent in the country in Cancer Care, Neurological Care, Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage, Hip Fracture Repair, Trauma Care and Women’s Health.
The Delta Group awards follow news in June that Cape Cod Healthcare was chosen as one of the top health care systems in America in the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: Health System Benchmarks Study.
“These tremendous awards should reinforce for people on and off Cape Cod what we have known for some time,” said Mr. Lauf. “The best health care in the state is available right here on Cape Cod.”
