15th Annual Emergency Care Conference Scheduled

(Falmouth, Feb. 16, 2012)Falmouth Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine will hold its 15th Annual Emergency Care Conference on March 14, 2012, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Coonamessett Inn in Falmouth. 

Headlining the event is pediatrician David Nelson, M.D., FAAP, who has been invited back by popular demand.  Dr. Nelson is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, as well as an Attending Physician in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at University Medical Center Hospital in Las Vegas.  He will give two lectures:  “The ABCs of Pediatric Assessment” and “Pediatric Medical and Surgical Emergencies.” 

Other speakers at the conference include: 

  • Edie Brous, RN, Esq, a nurse attorney from New York City, will discuss “Documentation and Liability:  How What You Write Shows Up in Court” and “Legal Aspects of Social Media.”

  • John Mendelsohn, MD, FAAEM, ABMT, will lecture on street drugs.  Dr. Mendelsohn is an Emergency Physician at Falmouth Hospital and a board certified Toxicologist.

  • Jane Metzger, RN, PhD, was Chief Nursing Officer at Rhode Island Hospital at the time of the Station Nightclub fire and will share her personal account and explain how this event tested emergency preparedness plans.  Ms. Metzger is currently the Chief Nursing Officer at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester.

Risk management credits; contact hours for nurses; continuing medical education credits for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practioners; and continuing education units for pre-hospital personnel are offered for this program.  If registered by February 21, the cost is $75 for pre-hospital personnel, $75 for respiratory therapists/cardiology techs/other, $85 for nurses, and $150 for physicians, PAs, and NPs.  Registrations after that date will be an additional $10.  For more information, contact Eileen O’Keeffe at eokeeffe@capecodhealth.org or 508-495-7117.
