PCP with a patient

Choosing a primary care provider and making regular visits is an important part of good health. Cape Cod Healthcare providers deliver efficient, coordinated and accessible services, and patients in need of a primary care home have a choice between innovative new approaches to care and more traditional models. At Cape Cod Healthcare, we believe that access to high-quality care is vital to improving the health of our community. That’s why we’re actively working to expand your options and connect you with trusted primary care providers.

What is a Primary Care Provider?

When you choose a primary care provider (PCP), you’re choosing someone to care for your overall health and wellness. Your PCP provides preventive care, treats common medical conditions and refers you to specialized care when needed.

This person can be a medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) or an advanced practice professional, such as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Learn more about these types of medical professionals.

Primary care providers often concentrate on a specific type of medical care, including:

  • Family medicine – Care for children and adults of all ages.
  • Internal medicine – Provide lifelong care to adults of all ages; manage chronic or complex conditions, such as diabetes.
  • Pediatric care – Specialize in the care of children, from newborns through adolescents.
  • Geriatric medicine – Care for older adults, especially those with age-related medical or cognitive issues.
