Medical Oncology – Chemo, Biologic and Hormonal Therapies
Medical oncology treats cancer using medicine and medical therapies, rather than surgical or radiation therapies. Medical oncologists diagnose and stage cancer and recommend and implement treatment. Treatments and services include:
- Chemotherapy – Uses drugs to target and kill cancer cells
- Biologic therapy – Also called immunotherapy, harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer or lessen the side effects of treatment.
- Hormonal therapy – Alters the body’s hormone levels to affect tumor growth in a hormone-sensitive cancer, such as breast or prostate cancer
- Blood and platelet transfusions
- Investigational therapy
