Nicholas Coppa, MD, FAANS, Neurological Surgeon

Nicholas Coppa, MD, grew up in Rhode Island and went to medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, and moved to the west coast to complete a fellowship in skull base and cerebrovascular neurosurgery and neuro-oncology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR.

After spending several years in Oregon performing complex cranial surgery, he decided his heart was in New England, so he found the perfect practice match at Neurosurgeons of Cape Cod.

“I chose to specialize in neurological surgery because it allows you to do many different aspects of medicine,” Dr. Coppa said. “You have to have good diagnostic skills, and you have to be a surgeon, which involves the ability to devise a plan and execute that plan. Neurosurgery incorporates radiology to interpret a lot of complex imaging of both the brain and the spine. You have to be an oncologist and treat tumors of the nervous system, and you have the ability to be a traumatologist and deal with many acute life-threatening circumstances as a result of head and spinal injuries.”
