High-tech care in a
peaceful setting at Falmouth Hospital Cape Cod Healthcare has
Catheterization Labs at both Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth
Hospital. They each house radiology and imaging suites, and are
equipped with the latest cardiac imaging technology. This high level of
technology provides cardiologists at Falmouth Hospital with comprehensive and
accurate data on heart disease, aiding in diagnosis and decisions on how to best
treat discovered problems. The Falmouth Cath Lab has the capacity to
service many of the estimated 800 patients on the Upper Cape who require
invasive cardiac imaging.
“The quality of the facility, and the increased access for patients created
by this lab, has let the patient volume grow greatly,” said Bruce Levy, M.D.,
director of the Falmouth lab. “Both patients and doctors are extremely pleased
with the level of care provided, and the convenience of the
facility.”
Cardiac catheterization is performed by inserting a tube
(the catheter) into an artery or vein. It is then moved through the circulatory
system until it reaches the heart, where an x-ray dye is injected. This allows
doctors to identify whether blood is flowing properly through the heart and the
main arteries surrounding it. Doctors can then diagnose if there is damage to a
heart valve or fatty build-up in the heart arteries. A cardiac catheterization
is typically an outpatient procedure, so patients do not have to stay overnight
at the hospital.
