Complementary Health Services Directory

2009-2010
Providers
Our second edition of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)
Directory coincides with the release of the report by the Institute of Medicine
(IOM) on CAM in the United States. This (2005) report was commissioned by 16
institutes, centers and offices of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and
the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
The crucial messages of the report are that:
(1) CAM-use is widespread and here to stay (2)
The same rules apply for testing of effectiveness and safety regardless of
origin, whether the therapies be CAM or conventional medicine
(3) Our shared, ultimate goal is to create a healthcare
delivery system that is comprehensive, patient-centered, and evidence-based
“The Committee believes that research aimed at answering questions about
outcomes of care are crucial to ensuring that healthcare professionals are
providing evidence-based, comprehensive care that encourages a focus on healing,
recognizes the importance of compassion and caring, emphasizes the centrality of
relationshipbased care, encourages patients to share in decision making about
therapeutic options, and promotes choices in care that can include complementary
and alternative medical therapies where appropriate.” (IOM Report, Page 222)
We have diligently prepared this Directory with these considerations in mind.
Included in this updated directory is an expanded list of practitioners as well
as a more comprehensive glossary. We hope this edition both educates and
provides our community with information and resources to benefit from the
services of these practitioners, all of whom meet stringent quality standards
set by the Falmouth Hospital Integrative Health Committee.
Falmouth Hospital continues to support the practice of CAM by qualified
practitioners in partnership with physicians and other clinical staff.
Currently, Falmouth Hospital has integrated CAM in our pain management,
surgical, rehabilitation, obstetrics and cancer services.
