Robot-Assisted Joint Surgery Now on Cape Cod

Those facing a knee or hip replacement on Cape Cod now have new, less-invasive options that result in less pain, a faster recovery and a greater certainty of success.

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce new customized surgery using robotic arm-guided technology, also known as Mako™ Partial Knee Replacement and Mako™ Total Hip Replacement procedures. The procedures are performed using the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System

Among the options offered by this new technology is treatment for knee problems that used to require total knee replacement. Using the precision of the robotic arm, surgeons at Cape Cod Healthcare will focus on removing only diseased bone, while helping to preserve healthy bone.

Among the benefits of the partial knee replacement are:

  • A smaller incision
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery and shorter hospital stay

As of now, three orthopedic surgeons have trained on the robotic arm-guided system and will soon begin performing procedures using this new technology. The robotic arm-guided technology can be used for a Medial Uni-Knee, Lateral Uni-Knee, Patella Femoral and Total Hip procedures.

With this new technology, surgeons, for the first time, can customize each patient’s surgery. For example, in the case of hip replacement, technologists perform a CT scan prior to surgery. The image is used to generate a color-coded 3D virtual model of the patient’s unique anatomy. The model is then loaded into the system’s software and used to create a personalized pre-operative plan.

During the procedure, the surgeon guides the robotic arm to prepare the hip socket and then positions the implant based on the pre-operative plan. The robotic arm assures that the pre-designated path is followed flawlessly.

“The robotic arm technology is an exciting new option for our patients,” said Michael K. Lauf, president and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “We are always searching for ways to improve the patient experience, while at the same time improving their outcomes. This new surgical system ensures that patients will receive customized procedures ideally suited just for them, and can stay close to home for the latest and best care.”
