Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center Open House

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that the public will soon be able to view and tour the new and expanded Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center (EC). A public open house will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the hospital at 27 Park Street, Hyannis.

Members of the community will be greeted by EC physicians and staff, and are welcome to tour the new facility before it officially opens in the near future. Visitors will enjoy family-friendly activities like face painting for children and magic shows, as well as refreshments, such as kettle corn, hotdogs, cupcakes and other snacks.

The new $22 million Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center has been under construction for the last 18 months and is located adjacent to the existing EC. The new EC features an additional 25,000 square feet of space (a total of 54,000 square feet), with 72 new patient treatment rooms.

The Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center was last updated in 1993, when annual patient volume was projected to be 55,000 visits. In recent years, the annual patient volume has been nearly double that, with annual visits exceeding 92,000. During the summer months, the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center in Hyannis, along with the Yawkey Emergency Center at Falmouth Hospital, are among the busiest in New England.
Despite the less than optimal conditions, the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center has consistently produced short wait times and high customer satisfaction ratings. With the opening of the new EC, the surroundings will finally match the high-quality care provided there, according to Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare.

“The Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center has been an invaluable asset to the Cape community for many years, thanks to our exceptional physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, technologists, therapists and support staff. They have been savings lives and caring for emergencies day in and day out, despite cramped conditions,” he said. “With this new Center, patients will receive care in a state-of-the-art setting, with the latest technology and equipment.”

The new Cape Cod Hospital EC features:

  • Innovative design elements such as abundant natural light, soothing colors and a reduction in highly reflective surfaces.
  • Customized patient care based on the level of service needed, severity of condition, age of patient or specialty involved.
  • The ability to accommodate changes in patient volumes by flexing clinical spaces up or down.
  • A racecourse design with clinical spaces in the center and patient rooms on the perimeter.
  • Slip-resistant floors and other geriatric-friendly aspects to care for our large elderly patient population.

The new Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Center was made possible in part by generous and committed donors, which contributed $16 million to the construction of this new facility.

With the completion of this new EC, the Cape Cod community now has two new state-of-the-art emergency centers. In March, Cape Cod Healthcare opened the $12.9 million Yawkey Emergency Center at Falmouth Hospital.

Parking for the Community Open House is available in the main hospital parking lot.
