Zarkin Family Appreciates Nurses at Cape Cod Hospital
Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that a generous gift from Herb and Susan Zarkin of Mashpee has established a fund to help Cape Cod Hospital nurses.
The Zarkin Family Nurse Appreciation Fund will allow the hospital to provide opportunities for nurses to relax in their off-duty time with such things as pizza parties, lively seminars, movie passes and other activities. In addition, this one-year pilot program will provide funding for other events such as workshops led by experts who will teach positive ways nurses can deal with the stresses associated with the demands of direct patient care.
The Zarkin family has experienced first-hand the excellent care Cape Cod Hospital (CCH) nurses provide, said Mr. Zarkin. As a patient at CCH twice, he said the care shown to him by nurses was “unbelievable,” and he and his wife wanted to show their gratitude in some way.
“The fund is about taking care of people who aren’t usually taken care of,” he said.
This is the second time the Zarkins have established a fund to help nurses. In 2005, the family set up a similar program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, to honor the care their daughter had received there.
“The nurses never left her side, and we watched the loving, caring, remarkable women who did their job in such a professional way, and took the time for her and for us, her family members,” he said.
The Dana-Farber and the Cape Cod Hospital experiences strengthened his and his wife’s respect and appreciation for nurses, Mr. Zarkin said. “I’ve seen what they did in our own lives, and I wanted to give back,” he said.
“Our nurses dedicate themselves on a daily basis to providing excellence in patient care,” said Judy Quinn, RN, Vice President of Patient Care for Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent company of Cape Cod Hospital. “To be recognized by the Zarkins’ generous gift is not only rewarding but reinforces for us that our efforts are valued and have not gone unnoticed.”
“We are very thankful to the Zarkins for establishing this unique gift,” added Michael K. Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare. “Our nurses provide exceptional clinical care, and they are the ones at the bedside who comfort and reassure patients and their families – often during very trying times. This fund will allow the hospital to provide a token of our appreciation for all that they do.”
