CCHC Regional Cancer Network Survey Results

The Cape Cod Healthcare Regional Cancer Network conducted a Cancer Care Survey during the summer of 2013 on behalf of RCN physicians, nurses and other oncology providers. The survey targeted patients, family members and friends who were willing to share their opinions and expectations about cancer care on Cape Cod.

The survey consisted of 11 questions designed to better understand patients’ experiences and expectations around cancer care at Cape Cod Healthcare. The survey answers will also be used to help integrate new programs into treatment regimens so that CCHC can continue to provide top-quality, accessible care to patients.

There were 105 responses to the survey, 26.7% of which were from males and 73.3% from females. The majority, 57.2%, fell into the 45-64 age range.  Of the responders, 58% visited Cape Cod Healthcare to receive services and 20% used CCHC services more than 10 times.
The majority of those surveyed indicated that they preferred to obtain information about cancer prevention and detection from their primary care physicians and a third of responders also indicated that screening tests for cancer detection rated high in their estimation.

When asked about the best way for cancer patients to receive support, 64.8% answered talking with other cancer survivors. Various types of support groups accounted for most of the other responses and 43.8% also mentioned a personal navigator to help with the healthcare maze. When asked for the top three ways to make patients, family and friends more comfortable during cancer treatment, 84.8% listed a courteous and friendly medical staff, while 81% named all necessary treatments in the same place, close to home.   Easy access in a sanctuary-like environment also rated high.

Cape Cod Healthcare scored high marks when asked how respondents would rate the quality of Cape Cod Healthcare cancer services, with 77.2% giving the top ratings of Very Good to Excellent. Those who rated services lower contributed more than 25 comments regarding areas that could use attention. In addition, there were more than 50 suggestions for ways to improve the experience, which will be instructive as Cape Cod Healthcare’s Regional Cancer Network continues to develop improved cancer services.
