23rd Annual Joshua Sears Memorial Blood Drive

The 23rd  Annual Joshua Sears Blood Drive will be held from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, at the Howard Masonic Lodge in South Yarmouth. The blood drive will benefit Cape Cod Healthcare’s Blood Center.

The annual Joshua Sears Blood Drive honors the late Joshua Sears, a 17-year-old Dennis-Yarmouth senior who died in 1991 of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Joshua died within a month of his diagnosis, and he received countless units of blood during his treatment. Josh was the son of John Sears and the late Joyce Sears, and brother to Kelli Jacobson and Terri, Rick, Ken and Dan Sears. The Howard Masonic Lodge started the annual blood drives in order to give to the community in Joshua’s memory. John Sears and his wife, Lee Sears, attend the blood drive each year, and greet and thank donors throughout the day.

The need for blood is constant throughout the year, and is particularly important around the holidays and the winter months. One in every seven people entering a hospital needs blood, and every pint of blood donated to Cape Cod Healthcare is used at Cape Cod Hospital or Falmouth Hospital.
The Cape Cod Blood Center collects about 35 percent of the required supply from the generosity of donors at local blood drives, like this one. The rest must be purchased from off-Cape sources. Donating to Cape Cod Healthcare helps ensure there is a constant supply of blood for our community.
