Dr. Paul Pirundini Named Cardiac Surgery Chief at Cape Cod Hospital
Cape Cod Healthcare and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) are pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Pirundini has been named Chief of Cardiac Surgery Services at Cape Cod Hospital (CCH).
Dr. Pirundini, who has been Acting Chief of Cardiac Surgery since August, has performed more than 1,500 cardiac surgical cases during his nine-year tenure at CCH. He received his medical degree at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, and completed residencies at Waterbury Hospital (General Surgery) in Waterbury, CT; and at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Cardiothoracic Surgery). He completed a fellowship in Cardiac Surgery at BWH. Dr. Pirundini is certified by the American Board of Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.
The cardiac surgery program at CCH is affiliated with BWH. Dr. Pirundini will work closely with John G Byrne, MD Chief of Cardiac Surgery at BWH and the other BWH cardiac surgeons, through joint conferences and quality improvement measures. Dr. Pirundini will also work closely with Dr. Dan Loberman, a BWH-trained cardiac surgeon who joined the CCH program as the second permanent surgeon on December 2.
“Our Cardiac Surgery program exemplifies our mission to provide access to top-quality care close to home, and to partner with others in order to bring a high level of service to our community,” said Michael Lauf, President and CEO, CCHC. “Our cardiac surgery partnership with BWH has been successful from the start, and I am confident that under Dr. Pirundini’s leadership the cardiac surgery team will continue the program’s strong record of quality outcomes and performance.”
In 2002, Cape Cod Hospital was one of only three community hospitals to be licensed by the state to perform open heart surgery. A cardiac surgery partnership was established between CCH and BWH, and the first procedure at CCH was performed in August 2002. Since that time, cardiac surgeons have performed more than 2,120 open heart surgeries at CCH.
“Dr. Pirundini is a superb cardiac surgeon and a compassionate physician,” said Byrne. “We are committed to providing expert cardiac surgery care to patients on the Cape and I’m confident that through Dr. Pirundini’s leadership, the collaboration between Cape Cod Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital will only continue to strengthen.”
