FH-Gosnold of Cape Cod collaboration honored

November 2012

A joint project between Falmouth Hospital and Gosnold of Cape Cod has received the Excellence in Outcomes Award from the Association for Behavioral Health (ABH), a statewide organization representing more than 80 community-based behavioral healthcare provider organizations. The award was announced as part of the ABH 2012 Recognition Awards at the association’s recent Salute to Excellence event in Waltham.
Each year, ABH recognizes human service employees, young people, consumer and family advocates, and others, who have made outstanding contributions to the field of mental health and addiction treatment. The Gosnold-Falmouth Hospital collaboration is working to integrate addiction treatment with medical care at the hospital. Gosnold on Cape Cod counselors are training hospital staff how to recognize withdrawal symptoms in patients, so they can be treated before they escalate into more serious medical issues.

"Our Salute to Excellence event enables us to honor people like the individuals involved with the Gosnold-Falmouth Hospital Collaboration Project who work each day to make life better for individuals and families affected by addiction," said Vic DiGravio, ABH's President/CEO. "This incredible team works together to provide compassionate, innovative care."

Falmouth Hospital Clinical Educator and addiction specialist Margaret Shapiro, RN, and Gosnold of Cape Cod CEO Ray Tamasi have spear-headed the collaboration. The partnership, which began in 2011 with a Cape Cod Healthcare Community Benefits grant, has resulted in a decline in the number of alcohol-dependent patients being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, from 50 percent to 10 percent, and in the average length of stay in the unit from 14.5 days to 6.2 days.

"We are very pleased that this successful project has been recognized by the ABH," said Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf. "These types of projects not only improve the lives of the patients who are directly involved, but the community as a whole."
