Falmouth Hospital Honored for Cancer Care

February 2012

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that the Falmouth Hospital Cancer Program has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for 2011 from the Commission on Cancer. FH is one of only four hospitals in Massachusetts, and 104 nationwide, to receive the distinction.

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) was created by the American College of Surgeons in 1922. The CoC establishes standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings. The CoC's Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes cancer programs that provide quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the honor following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, who looks for compliance with certain standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program. The standards that form the basis of the award criteria are drawn from six areas of program activity:

  • Cancer committee leadership
  • Cancer data management
  • Clinical management
  • Research
  • Community outreach
  • Quality improvement

The Falmouth Hospital Award comes on the heels of the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative certification of Hematology Oncology Specialists of Cape Cod in North Falmouth (HOSCC). HOSCC is one of four oncology practices in Massachusetts to achieve this important designation, and the only one in Southeastern Massachusetts.

"Quality is a top priority at Falmouth Hospital, and at Cape Cod Healthcare, overall," said Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael K. Lauf. "We are pleased that the Commission on Cancer has distinguished the Falmouth Hospital cancer program with this award. Cancer patients on the Upper Cape can feel comfortable that they are receiving exceptional care."
