Falmouth Hospital a Top Performer

December 2012

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that Falmouth Hospital has been named to the 2012 Harvard Pilgrim Hospital Honor Roll. For the last six years, the Honor Roll has recognized those adult, acute care hospitals whose performance is among the top 25 percent of hospitals measured nationally on a set of composite quality and patient experience measures. The composite measures are reported by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and from the Leapfrog Group.

"At Harvard Pilgrim, we believe that amazing things happen when we work together,” said Eric H. Schultz, President and CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. “In that spirit, it is a pleasure to recognize our honor roll hospitals for their progress in making health care better and more affordable for our members."

The award follows closely on the heels of The Joint Commission’s recent recognition of Falmouth Hospital as a 2011 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures: heart attack, pneumonia and surgical care.

Harvard Pilgrim's Honor Roll is based on CMS data for the period July 2011-June 2012. The data was downloaded from Hospital Compare, a tool used by CMS for comparing hospitals on clinical quality. Composite scores were calculated for more than 150 of the area’s most respected community, teaching and specialty hospitals. The scores were calculated for four Process of Care categories:

  • Cardiac
  • Pneumonia
  • Healthcare Acquired Infections
  • Surgeries

Falmouth Hospital was one of 34 hospitals in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine who were named to the Honor Roll, including such hospitals as Brigham and Women's Hospital, Lahey Clinic and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. FH was rated at 97.26 percent for heart attack care, 99.35 percent for healthcare associated infection, 98.39 percent pneumonia care and 99.19 percent for surgical care improvement.

Patient experience survey results were also taken from the Hospital Compare data and each hospital's performance was compared to the national average. Leapfrog data was also downloaded and four areas were reviewed:

  • Prevent Medical Errors
  • Appropriate ICU Staffing
  • Steps to Avoid Harm
  • Reduce In-Hospital Injuries

The Leapfrog Group is a voluntary program that works with its employer members to encourage transparency and easy access to healthcare information.

"I am extremely pleased that Falmouth Hospital has been recognized in this way. The Harvard Pilgrim 2012 Honor Roll is a distinctive achievement by all who provide care to our patients at the hospital," said Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf. "This honor demonstrates what we are try to do each and every day across the Cape Cod Healthcare system, and that is to deliver the latest, best and proven care to our patients and the community at large, in a caring, compassionate and effective way."

In a letter notifying Mr. Lauf of Falmouth Hospital’s achievement, Mr. Schultz congratulated the hospital for being named to the 2012 Honor Roll.

"Thank you for your hospital's contributions toward improving the quality of care to our members," he wrote.
