Falmouth Hospital Cancer Program Receives Two Accreditations

August 2011

Cape Cod Healthcare is pleased to announce that Falmouth Hospital's cancer program has received two significant endorsements from two accreditation agencies: the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Both are three-year accreditations by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).

The NAPBC accreditation makes FH's program one of just seven accredited programs in Massachusetts, 16 in New England and 313 nationwide. Surveyors look at statistics on all patients with breast disease (both cancerous and benign) from 2010. They make sure patients are not having unnecessary mastectomies. They also look at compliance rates for adjuvant radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal blockade and pathology reports.

Accredited programs must have a multi-disciplinary approach to breast cancer care, including dedicated breast cancer conferences with representation and input from diagnostic radiology, surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast navigators, genetic counselors, clinical trial specialists and psycho-social counselors.

Falmouth Hospital's cancer program has consistently received CoC accreditation, as has Cape Cod Hospital's Cancer Services program. The CoC accreditation requires cancer programs to comply with standards that represent the full scope of the program, such as cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

FH's cancer services received an Accreditation with Commendation, which means the program is eligible for the Outstanding Achievement Award, which will be determined in early 2012.

"These accreditations reflect our high standards for cancer care," said Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf. "They illustrate our focus on access, technology, multidisciplinary care, information and education; and they are a credit to our dedicated cancer team members at Falmouth Hospital and throughout Cape Cod Healthcare."
