GET WALKING

STEP 1

FIND A WALK JUST FOR YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Review the trail maps and descriptions at the National Seashore and select a trail that meets your abilities.

STEP 2

REGISTER FOR YOUR HEALTHY PARKS, HEALTHY PEOPLE PASSPORT.
passportThese are designed much like a travel passport. You are encouraged to record all your walks through the summer and fall. Note that each trail map designate the degree of difficulty, the average number of steps and a description of conditions along the route. Carry a watch or use a pedometer on your watch or with a smart phone app to record your times. Measure and record your heartbeat.

Cape Cod Healthcare and Cape Cod National Seashore staff can help you get started with your PASSPORT when you register. They also will stamp your PASSPORT, certifying that you have completed a particular walk. There will be incentives and rewards in place for those who not only complete the five designated Healthy Parks, Healthy People trails this season, but also complete all 12 trails within the Seashore.

STEP 3

GET EVALUATED BEFORE YOU WALK WITH A MINI HEALTH ASSESSMENT that includes your blood pressure reading (before and after your walk), plus your height and weight to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI).

At this time, you can discuss with Cape Cod Healthcare staff what level walk you plan to take and learn if it is advisable to see your doctor first. Staff also will discuss your health test results, which are confidential by law.
